The Latest Boutiques, Hermès, Omega & Mercedes-Benz

Over the last decade, collaborations between luxury brands and contemporary artists have gone beyond mere artistic partnerships towards a new kind of luxury branding.
PARIS – Art and fashion have always developed side by side, for fashion, like art, often gives visual expression to the cultural zeitgeist. During the 1920s, Salvador Dalí created dresses for Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiapparelli. In the 1930s, Ferragamo’s shoes commissioned designs for advertisements from Futurist painter Lucio Venna, while Gianni Versace commissioned works from artists such as Alighiero Boetti and Roy Lichtenstein for the launch of his collections. Yves Saint Laurent’s vast art collection, recently auctioned at Christie’s in Paris, testified to his great love of art and revealed the influence of a variety of artists on his own designs.
In the 1980s, relationships between luxury brands and artists were advanced when Alain Dominique Perrin created the Fondation Cartier. In the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain, a book marking the foundation’s 20th anniversary, Perrin says he makes “a connection between all the different sorts of arts, and luxury goods are a kind of art. Luxury goods are handicrafts of art, applied art.”

Last week we asked the question: Will luxury goods experience a slowdown, on the back of current economic woes and the possibility of recession? The feelings from luxury brand executives were mixed, as were findings from reports and measures of consumer confidence, but when you examine the cold hard facts – in this case the openings of lavishly appointed boutiques – it seems unlikely that executives have pulled in the reigns on retail investment just yet.
China in particular. Economists have worried about the sustainability of China’s luxury spending boom since earlier in the year and more recently, the debate has been reignited in the wake of a maturing and changing market. Yet just this month, six major openings launched in Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong alone – one being the launch of a second Harvey Nichols Hong Kong location, covering almost 8000sqm, estimated to have cost $19 million. Similarly, Lane Crawford has dedicated 2,300sqm to shoes and accessories, with hand embroidered silk panels for walls and hundreds of pieces of bespoke furniture.
If there is trouble ahead, it has certainly not yet arrived. In the meantime everyone from Vivienne Westwood to Maison Martin Margiela to Alexander McQueen have launched Mainland flagships in the hope of capitalising on China’s all-consuming boom.
